Background of the Study
Nollywood, Nigeria’s prolific film industry, has become a powerful medium for storytelling and cultural expression. In Aba South, Nollywood movies play a significant role in shaping and reflecting cultural values. These films often portray traditional beliefs, social norms, and contemporary issues, thereby influencing viewers’ perceptions of cultural identity (Obi, 2023). While Nollywood serves as a tool for cultural preservation, it also introduces modern narratives that may challenge or modify long-held cultural practices (Chukwu, 2024). The dynamic interplay between cinematic representations and societal values has led to debates on whether Nollywood reinforces cultural heritage or accelerates cultural change (Uche, 2025). This study investigates the extent to which Nollywood movies affect cultural values in Aba South, analyzing film content, audience reception, and the potential shifts in cultural norms. The research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the medium’s dual role as both a preserver and transformer of cultural identities.
Statement of the Problem
In Aba South, Nollywood movies have emerged as influential cultural artifacts that shape public perceptions and values. However, the impact of these films on traditional cultural values remains ambiguous (Obi, 2023). While some view Nollywood as a means to promote and preserve cultural heritage, others argue that its modern narratives contribute to cultural dilution and change (Chukwu, 2024). The lack of empirical evidence on this dual impact creates uncertainty among cultural stakeholders. This study aims to address this gap by evaluating the influence of Nollywood movies on the cultural values of communities in Aba South (Uche, 2025).
